Purchase of a Seaglider-AUV
The Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Gothenburg (The University) has an ongoing polar ocean research expedition in remote areas of the Southern Ocean. The research project is preparing a long endurance expedition (6-9 months) for deep diving science observations in the marginal sea ice. For this project the University needs a technically sophisticated and robust autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). All previous research data from the past 7 years is attained from Seagliders. It is therefore of great importance for the research results that the new AUV can generate data with identical format, from identical equipment/sensors. In addition to the above, more requirements and information is presented below.
Place of delivery: Gothenburg
See information above and in section iV.

- absence of competition for technical reasons
The Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Gothenburg (The University) has an ongoing polar ocean research expedition in remote areas of the Southern Ocean. The research project is preparing a long endurance expedition (6-9 months) for deep diving science observations in the marginal sea ice. For this project the University needs a technically sophisticated and robust autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) enabling/offering:
(i) field deployments without requiring on site ballasting of platform (thereby reducing the risk of leakage by opening up the vehicle and no training is required in order to ballast the vehicle);
(ii) robustness in shell/hull without external moving parts – reducing the risk of unplanned maintenance and damages;
(iii) a propulsion technology and design enabling long term measurement with continuous deployments and diving observations to 1 000m depth;
(iv) data format and communications architecture allowing transmission of complete sensor data after each dive;
(v) a low power and low profile turbulence sensor to allow long endurance (multiple months) turbulence measurements to be completed;
(vi) sea ice avoidance capability.
The University has identified one AUV supplier that meets the research project´s crucial needs, the Seaglider AUV from Kongsberg Underwater Technology, Inc (KUTI). KUTI possesses an exclusive manufacturing license as the sole commercial supplier of this type of AUV. Also, all previous research data attained over the past 7 years is Seaglider-formatted data. It is of great importance for the research results that the requested AUV can generate data in the same format, from identical equipment/sensors. Due to these technical and sole supplier reasons, the University of Gothenburg intends to purchase the Seaglider AUV from KUTI with reference to chapter 6, 14 § point 2 in the Swedish public procurement act (2016:1145).
